![]() ![]() It was fenced off, graded and planted as a park. In the early 19th century, the center square began to take on a more formal aspect. Although there were some houses along the bordering streets, the center square itself was undeveloped. In the 18th century, the city’s activities centered more on the mercantile waterfront, which was located some distance from the center square. When New Haven was first settled in 1637, the town was divided into nine squares, the center of which was reserved for public use and eventually became the New Haven Green. It was listed on the State Register of Historic Places on September 4, 1986. The Elm Street Historic District is roughly bounded by Elm, College, Wall and Church Streets. The buildings represent the work of architects who achieved both local and national prominence, including Ithiel Town, Henry Austin, Cass Gilbert, Grosvenor Atterbury and Douglas Orr. The architectural significance of its buildings embody the distinguishing characteristics of 18th-century Federal and Greek Revival domestic architecture late 19th-century institutional architecture and the Neo-Classical, Colonial Revival, Neo-Gothic and modernistic styles of the early 20th century. The buildings in the district show the evolution of the area from one that was largely residential, to one which served as part of the religious, political and financial center of New Haven. We suggest that general neuropathology in schizophrenia alters the neural system configurations associated with self-representation. Many of the areas showing abnormality have been shown in other studies to differ between patients and controls in structure and with other activation paradigms. Group differences were less evident when subjects were thinking about their mothers and tended to go in the opposite direction when thinking about a president. ![]() In addition, patients showed greater signal increases in frontal, temporal gyri and insula, and smaller signal decreases in posterior regions than healthy controls when thinking about themselves. ![]() Activation abnormalities reported previously in cortical midline structures were again noted. Patients were less likely and slower to endorse positive self-attributes, and more likely and quicker to endorse negative self-attributes than controls. Blood oxygenation level dependent signal in each condition was compared to resting fixation. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to compare activation throughout the brain in people with schizophrenia and healthy controls (Kelly et al., 2002) while they indicated whether trait adjectives described attributes of themselves, their mother or a former president of the United States. Studies have revealed activation abnormalities in schizophrenia in cortical midline structures associated with self-reference. Impairments in self-awareness contribute to disability in schizophrenia. ![]()
